Is it right for you?

IPL is not suitable for every skin or every type of pigmentation, which is why we always assess your skin first.

Often chosen for

  • Sun spots and sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone and freckling
  • Redness and visible capillaries
  • Dull skin and early signs of ageing

Your therapist will check

  • Your skin tone and any recent tan or sun exposure
  • The type of pigmentation you have
  • Medications that make you sensitive to light
  • Skin conditions and pregnancy

A note on melasma

Melasma is a type of pigmentation linked to hormones and heat, and light-based treatments can sometimes make it worse. If we think your pigmentation may be melasma, we will suggest gentler options or recommend you see your doctor or a dermatologist. Any new, changing or unusual spot should be checked by a doctor before treatment.

What to expect

1. Patch test

A small test area, at least 24 hours before your first treatment.

2. Your treatment

You wear protective eyewear while a cool gel and light pulses are applied. Most people feel a warm flick.

3. The days after

Spots can look darker for a few days before they fade. Some redness is normal.

4. Your course

Sessions are spaced a few weeks apart. Your therapist recommends how many.

Results vary between people. Your therapist will explain what is realistic for your skin.

Aftercare

Protect from the sun

Wear SPF 50+ every day, and avoid tanning and long periods in the sun during your course.

Be gentle

Skip scrubs and strong actives for a few days, and do not pick at spots as they fade.

Plan ahead

Many clients start IPL in autumn or winter, when there is less sun to avoid.

Questions

Is IPL the same as laser?

No. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single laser beam. It is used for many of the same concerns, such as sun spots and redness.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a warm flick, like a rubber band, with each pulse. A cool gel keeps you comfortable, and your therapist checks in throughout.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your skin and the pigmentation. Most people need a course. Your therapist will recommend a number and explain the cost at your consultation.

Can IPL treat melasma?

IPL can sometimes make melasma worse, so we assess your pigmentation first and may recommend another approach or a visit to your doctor or dermatologist.

Do you also do IPL hair reduction?

Yes. We use the same SHR/IPL technology for hair reduction. See SHR/IPL hair reduction.
