How To Get The Most From Your Eye Lash Extensions

The big secret to long lasting lash extenions

Caring for lash extensions is a lot about the glue that is used to adhere the extensions to your natural lashes.

Tips to consider before you get your extensions

If you have ever come to a lash extension appointment wearing, say, thick eyeliner, you may have noticed the time and care that the lash technician takes to thoroughly cleanse your eye area before applying the lash extensions. This is because for the lash glue to set properly it needs to go on to clean oil free skin. Too much make up, moisturiser and sunscreen will all change the chemical composition of the glue and stop it setting properly, resulting in many of your lashes falling out within the first day or so of getting them. And this doesn’t make any one happy!

Once they are on, how to care for your extensions

Oily eyemakeup, eyecreams and even the build up of the skin’s natural oils can all contribute to the early breakdown of the eyelash adhesive. This means that it is a good idea to gently cleanse your eye with oil free cleanser and also to limit your use of greasy eye make up while wearing lash extensions.

Another important step in good lash extension aftercare is to not get your lashes wet for 24 hours after the extensions go on. This is because the glue is still setting and takes this long to harden.

Steps to take to make the most of your lash extensions

  1.  Arrive at your appointment with no eye make up on. This means that the therapist will not have to spend a long time cleaning your lashes, leaving them MORE time to put lashes on you.
  2. Keep your lashes 100% dry for 24 hours after the extensions go on. This includes staying out of steamy environments (or wearing swimming goggles if necessary!)
  3. Use a gentle oil free lash cleanser to cleanse around the base of your lashes, even if you haven’t worn any make up to prevent the build up of oils that will break down the lash glue more quickly.
  4. Don’t rub your eyes!
  5. Sleep on your back. I know that this is hard to control when you are asleep you tend to move, but it’s good if you can do it.

Your eyes natural lash cycle and extensions

It’s worth noting that even with good care, sometimes you will loose a few lashes in the first day after getting extensions - this is because your lashes like all the hair on your body goes through cycles of growth, from short new hair to old hair ready to fall out. It is these older hairs that are essentially finished growing and are just sitting in the follicle that are the ones that fall out when you get a new set of lash extensions. The weight of the extension effectively pulls the unattached hair out of the follicle. This kind of drop only applies to new sets of lashes, as once you have the extensions in place any old hairs will fall as soon as they detach from the follicle, pulled by the weight of the extension.

If you do experience this kind of drop after getting a new set of extensions just give us a ring and we can fit you in for a quick half hour top up.

Otherwise, if you keep your lashes clean and avoid water in the first 24 hours you should enjoy fabulous lash extensions for weeks.
